About Stone Coated Steel

Stone Coated Steel Roof Panels are a designer roofing product that are a permanent solution, a lifetime roof system. This product can be found on homes and businesses alike internationally and has been tested in every climate condition on earth. At the heart of every panel is a 26 gauge recycled steel core that is covered with Zinc and Aluminum alloys that prevent corrosion. Next, the steel roofing panels are flood-coated with a special acrylic polymer resin that provides a base layer for setting the Quartz Earth Stone granules. The Quartz granules are manufactured with a UV reflective coating provided by the 3M Corporation. The stone covered panels are then placed in ovens and baked until the desired bond is reached. Finally an acrylic glaze is applied to the finished product.

Profiles: Stone coated steel roofs are made to look like concrete or clay barrel tiles, S-tiles, and reverse curve tiles. A metal shake profile is offered as well as an alternative to real cedar shakes. Real shakes are beautiful but have a short lifespan and are extremely flammable. In some areas of the country real shakes are illegal to install due to the spreading wildfires that travel roof to roof. An architectural shingle profile is offered as well for those who wish to maintain the conventional appearance of asphalt shingles.

For New Construction: Stone coated steel can be installed directly to a plywood deck or metal deck. The best choice of underlayment varies as to specific region and/or environment. Ideally a high temperature Peel and stick membrane is most efficient. In most cases the roofing system can be installed with or without a batten system. Metal reflects heat naturally and when coupled with a horizontal and or gridded batten system will provide for excellent air insulation and also let the roof breathe which in return produces energy savings for the homeowner.

For Re-Roofing: Being a green roofing product stone coated steel is specifically designed to go over asphalt shingle roofs as well as cedar shakes and fiber cement roofs. Keeping what would be construction debris out of our landfills. Stone coated steel only weighs around 1 1/2 pounds per square foot installed. Therefore there is no weight consideration or extra engineering needed for strengthening the existing structural members of the home or building. However, removing an existing roof or going over the one you have is something to be determined on-site by a professional.
